John Hardy , mining Shullsburg; born Dec 1 1831 in Ralls Co. Missouri came to Galena in 1845 and Lafayette Co. in 1848. In 1870 he opened a store in Darlington and continued that for 3 years. He was a member of the Village and Township Boards and was on the committee to build the Monroe Railroad Extension of the C., M & St. P.R.R. He married Lucinda S. Scales (daughter of Colonel S. H. Scales) in July 14, 1856. They owned 900 acres in Lafayette Co. with part in valuable mineral holdings. Colonel Scales died Sept 13 1877 age 72 years.
